AirCover: Host Damage Protection

Host damage protection, included in AirCover for Hosts, provides up to $3 million in reimbursement if your property or belongings are damaged by a guest during their stay. If a guest does not cover the cost of repairs, this protection steps in to cover damage to your home and furnishings. It also reimburses for additional cleaning costs when necessary, such as removing stains caused by guests or their guests, handling pet accidents, and addressing smoke odor removal, so you’re not left covering these unexpected expenses.

What Does It Cover:

Here are the key areas it covers:

  1. Damage to Property: Whether a guest (or their invitees) accidentally breaks furniture, electronics, or other personal items, AirCover reimburses hosts for repair or replacement.
  2. Damage to Parked Vehicles: Coverage includes protection against damage caused by guests (or their invitees) to parked cars, boats, or other vehicles located on the property.
  3. Deep Cleaning and Repairs: If a guest causes significant mess or damage that requires professional cleaning or repair, hosts can claim these expenses under AirCover.
  4. Loss of Income: If a property is damaged to the point that it becomes un-rentable, AirCover compensates for the loss of potential booking revenue during repairs.
  5. Pet Damage Protection: Host damage protection under AirCover covers unexpected expenses, such as deep cleaning for smoke odor or repair and replacement costs from pet damage, like if a cat scratches up the curtains or a pet stains the carpet. With Pet Damage Protection included, AirCover also handles property damage caused by guests’ pets, so hosts aren’t left paying for these repairs themselves.

What It Does NOT Cover:

While AirCover offers comprehensive protection for Airbnb hosts, there are certain situations where it does not apply. Here’s what is not covered:

  1. Wear and Tear: Regular maintenance issues like paint fading, furniture aging, or general deterioration are not covered. Hosts are responsible for these.
  2. Acts of Nature: Property loss due to Earthquakes, Hurricanes and other acts of nature.
  3. Intentional Host Damage: Any damages caused by the host or someone acting on their behalf will not be eligible for compensation.
  4. Items of Extraordinary Value: If you have high-value items in your home, they may not be fully covered under AirCover, as it has limits on luxury or rare collectibles.
  5. Unsubstantiated Claims: Claims without proper documentation (receipts, proof of damage, photos, etc.) may be denied. Clear evidence is required to process claims successfully.
  6. Damage to Shared Spaces: In cases where the damage is to shared building spaces (e.g., common areas in apartment complexes), AirCover may not apply.
  7. Other: Loss of Currency or Normal Cleanings

AirCover: Host Liability Insurance

Host liability insurance, included in AirCover for Hosts, offers up to $1 million in coverage in the rare case that you’re found legally responsible for a guest being injured or for their belongings being damaged or stolen during their stay. This protection extends to others who help you host, such as Co-Hosts and cleaners, allowing you to welcome guests with added confidence and peace of mind on Airbnb.

What Does It Cover:

 Here’s what is covered:

  • Physical Harm: Host liability insurance provides coverage if a guest or another person sustains an injury at your property and you are found legally responsible. For example, if a guest trips on a loose rug in your entryway and injures their ankle, the insurance can help cover the associated medical expenses.
  • Loss to Guest’s Property: This coverage also protects against damages to or theft of a guest’s personal belongings if you are found liable. For instance, if a guest’s laptop is damaged due to a water leak in their room, or their belongings are stolen from the property due to a security oversight, host liability insurance may cover the costs.
  • Damage to Shared Spaces: Host liability insurance extends to common areas, providing protection if a guest causes accidental damage to shared spaces within or near your property, such as building lobbies or neighboring properties. For example, if a guest damages a shared lobby light fixture or scuffs up a wall with luggage, the insurance can help cover repair expenses, shielding hosts from unexpected costs.

What It Does NOT Cover:

 Here’s what is not covered:

  • Intentional Damage: Host liability insurance does not cover damage or injuries that result from intentional acts. For example, if a guest deliberately breaks a window, any costs related to that damage wouldn’t be covered by liability insurance.

  • Items Covered under Host Damage Protection: Host damage protection, a separate coverage under AirCover, steps in to cover accidental or guest-caused damage to your property and belongings. This includes instances such as a guest spilling red wine on a white sofa or scratching the hardwood floors with their luggage. These types of damages are covered to help hosts avoid unexpected repair costs.

  • Other exclusions may apply

Common Misconceptions About AirCover

When it comes to AirCover for hosts, several common misconceptions can lead to confusion and mismanagement of expectations. Here are a few of the most prevalent misunderstandings:

  1. Misconception: AirCover is the Same as Traditional Insurance
Many hosts believe that AirCover functions like traditional homeowners insurance. However, while it provides coverage for specific damages caused by guests, it does not replace comprehensive insurance policies that cover a wider range of risks. Hosts still need their own insurance to cover scenarios outside AirCover’s scope.
  2. Misconception: AirCover Automatically Covers All Damages
Some hosts think that all damages will be automatically covered under AirCover. In reality, hosts must document damages and provide sufficient evidence to support their claims. Without proper documentation, such as photos and receipts, claims may be denied.
  3. Misconception: Filing a Claim is a Simple Process
While Airbnb aims to streamline the claim process, hosts often underestimate the complexity involved. Many find that gathering documentation, understanding proof requirements, and navigating the claims process can be more challenging than anticipated.
  4. Misconception: Claims Will Always Be Approved
Hosts may assume that if they file a claim, it will be automatically approved. However, Airbnb has strict guidelines, and if claims do not meet their criteria or lack sufficient evidence, they may be denied.
  5. Misconception: AirCover is Only Available for Certain Hosts
Some hosts believe that AirCover is limited to new hosts or those in specific regions. In fact, AirCover is available for all hosts on the platform, providing a safety net regardless of experience or location.
